Genre: Self-help, motivational, personal transformation
In this post, I will tell you what I think of ‘Girl, Wash Your Face’ by Rachel Hollis. She is a skilled author, speaker and blogger who inspires many women to pursue their dreams. As a prosperous entrepreneur, I wanted to read her first self-help book.
The book has 20 chapters, each one dealing with a specific falsehood that Rachel used to accept about herself or the world. For instance, some of the falsehoods are: “I’ll start tomorrow”, “I’m not good enough”, “I’m not a good mom”, “I should be further along by now” and so forth. She shows how these falsehoods prevented her from living her best life and how she conquered them with bravery and faith.
She also reveals some of the methods and routines that helped her change her outlook and behavior. She urges you to write down your dreams and goals, to practice thankfulness and optimism, to look after your health and well-being, to be around supportive people and to be truthful and genuine with yourself and others.
Rachel is amusing and delightful as she shares her personal stories and lessons from overcoming various difficulties in her life. She covers topics like career, marriage, motherhood, self-esteem and more with a lot of wit and wisdom. She also gives you useful tips and exercises to help you achieve your goals and aspirations.
“Comparison is the death of joy, and the only person you need to be better than is the one you were yesterday.”
― Rachel Hollis
However, this book is not for everybody. I liked this book, but you will find a lot of different views and each has their own angle. Two things I noticed were – she is Christian and does include her faith strongly in this book, and some parts are preachy and should be taken with a grain of salt. Also, if you do a quick research, the author has quite some strings of controversies attached to her.
Overall, she made me laugh and think about my own life. If you are looking for a fun and uplifting read that will make you feel like you can conquer anything, then you can check out this book.
